STAKEHOLDERS in Bulawayo have gathered at the Council Chambers today to discuss the local authority’s proposed decision to establish a standalone water utility company.
The council has begun by explaining what is involved in setting up a private water utility company for the local authority.
Council officials have stated that by ring-fencing its water budgets, it stands to improve services.
The proposed Water and Sanitation Public Utility will be wholly owned by the council.
Deliberations will also address the ownership of assets for the new utility.
The council will remain the asset owner, while the proposed utility will manage the assets.
The proposed utility aligns with government plans for the privatisation of water resources in local authorities.
The proposed utility will be run by a seven-member board, which will report to the council.
