Bulawayo to host Africa Day chess tourney

The Bulawayo Chess Association (BCA) will host the Africa Day Open Day Chess tournament at Montrose girls high in Bulawayo on Friday.

The tournament, which was last year won by Phakamani Sithole of Nkulumane Chess Club is an initiative by the association which celebrates public holidays through chess and will see a lot of chess players taking part.

Registration fee for the open section and the ladies’ section is pegged at $5, $3 for the junior section and for the development section that is from Grade Seven going downwards is $2. Registration deadline is on 23 May and a late registration fee of $8 will be paid by those who fail to meet the deadline.

Asked for a comment on the preparations of the tournament, Bca chairman Elvis Shora said everything was going according to plan and a huge turnout is expected.

“So far everything is going well, invitations have been sent to a number of schools and chess clubs. Some have already started paying hence we are expecting large numbers of people,” he said.

Participants are encouraged to put on African attires on the day of the competition.
