BULAWAYO hosts this year’s Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) driver of the year competitions today as part of efforts to improve road safety and proper handling of vehicles. TSCZ regional manager Barbra Mpofu yesterday said 16 companies had registered for participation in the competitions that draw drivers from Matabeleland, Mashonaland, Masvingo, the Midlands and Manicaland regions.
“The competition targets drivers of buses, rigid trucks and articulated truck categories. We are having the competition now at national level and the drivers who will win will represent Zimbabwe in the Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) competitions,” said Mpofu.
“16 companies will be competing and from these we will remain with nine finalists, with three drivers from each category.”
Mpofu said the programme has received a lot of support from the corporate sector.
“The local organising committee of the competitions asked for sponsorship from various companies and five companies came through for us,” she said.
Mpofu said the today’s event was a follow up to regional competitions held recently.
The winners will get cash prizes and trophies.
