THE country’s basketball enthusiasts are in for a treat when Bulawayo’s ZITF plays host to the regional Zone Six Basketball Club Championships next month.
The regional tournament, which will feature top clubs from 10 countries — South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Angola, Botswana, ESwatini, Namibia, Lesotho and hosts Zimbabwe — will run from October 20 to 29.
Malawi, Lesotho and Namibia will be making their maiden appearances at the regional club finals.
Sikhumbuzo Ndlovu, local organising committee chairman, said preparations for the fiesta have started and is confident that Zimbabwe will stage a memorable tournament.
“We are expecting all the 10 countries from our region to attend and we have since started preparations to stage a remarkable event. Each of the countries that will be coming is expected to bring two men’s teams and two women’s sides. The top two teams will then represent our region at the Fiba Africa Club Championships in December,” said Ndlovu.
Defending regional champions, Premiera Augosto (men) and Interclube (women), both of Angola, have confirmed their participation. Interclube have won a record five-regional titles.
Another Angolan outfit that is coming for the championships is Libolo, a force to reckon with in continental basketball.
Ndlovu said Zimbabwe’s four representatives will be announced today. — @ZililoR
