A Bulawayo family is appealing for financial assistance to raise US$1 000 for the treatment of their one-year-old son, Sphamandla Ngwenya, who has been diagnosed with leukaemia.
Sphamandla, who is a twin, is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare.
His condition has been further complicated by hepatosplenomegaly (an enlarged spleen and liver), ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen), and chronic liver disease.
According to his mother, Onesisa Oglady Mabhena, the family is struggling to keep up with the mounting daily medical expenses.
“We are being charged US$100 daily, and I cannot afford it. Some crucial medical tests have been delayed due to lack of funds, which has also delayed the start of treatment,” she said.
The family is seeking a total of US$1 000 to cover hospital bills, blood tests, and medication, while doctors continue to carry out further tests to determine the next steps in Sphamandla’s treatment.
They are appealing to well-wishers, health professionals, and members of the community for any form of assistance that could help save Sphamandla’s life.
Those willing to assist can contact his mother on 0771 732 015 or his grandmother on 0782 530 074.
