Bulawayo turns out in force for Matulana’s 32nd album launch

ON Saturday, veteran musician Obadiah Matulana successfully launched his 32nd album, Ingubo Entsha, to a packed crowd at Esibayeni Leisure Centre in Bulawayo, where fans eagerly embraced the long-awaited release.

The event drew notable figures from the arts scene, including Albert Nyathi, Inkunzi kaSilanke, Sotja Moyo, Jeys Marabini, Madlela Skhobokhobo and Joshua Sibanda, among others. Live performances included appearances from Phelandaba Choir, Inkunzi Ka Silanke & Lupane Original Sounds, King Phosa & Nkayi Challengers, Ferdinand Mguni & Nyambi Stars, Dakamela Super Sounds, Mabuya Super Sound and Matopo Big Stars.

The album, directed by Nthuseng Ncube, Thandazani Nyoni (Ndolwane Super Sounds manager) and King Phosa of Nkayi Challengers, is a 10-track collection.

It features songs, Ingubo Entsha, Usikhethile, Iloja Elidala, Ngiphilelani, Ngiyaxolisa, Divorce No 1, Impendulo, Intandane, Spare Wheel and Intshengu.

The Kanindo musician, whose music journey spans over four decades, said the album carries important messages, such as the call to address the growing issue of drug and substance abuse.

He said the track Empini 1960s to 1980, reflects on the country’s liberation struggle and encourages citizens to work together in nation-building. Matulana said the freedom fighters popularised the Kanindo music in Zimbabwe.

Matulana’s music, infused with the rhythmic flair of Rhumba and deeply influenced by East African Kanindo, embodies the historical essence of Zimbabwe’s musical evolution.

He expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support at the Esibayeni launch, saying it has inspired him to extend the launch across various townships and nearby areas.

“I’m truly grateful for the turnout at the launch, which shows that I still have strong support in Bulawayo.”

Another launch for the musician, affectionately known as Dr Jah Kanindo, is set for this Saturday at Blue Lagoon ,at Renkini bus terminus in Bulawayo. — @mthabisi_mthire
