FORMER Tashas Supermarket employees lost over $13,000 and R64,000 to a thieving treasurer who has since been arraigned before a West Commonage magistrate charged with theft.
Mavis Shonai (40) of house number 6903, Pumula North, Bulawayo appeared before magistrate Tancy Dube and was remanded out of custody on free bail to April 28.
Shonai, who was the treasurer of Vision Burial Society – formed by former Tashas Supermarket employees – has pleaded not guilty.

For the State, Charity Nyathi told the court that Shonai was mandated with receiving money from members, keeping it and depositing the money into the burial society’s bank account.

During a period between July 2010 and March last year, the accused received monthly subscriptions amounting to $28,363,57 and R64,000 from        members.
The accused spent $14,665,57 in bereavements, refunds and other expenses.

She then allegedly converted $13,698 and R64, 000 to her own use.
Members noticed that the money was missing and made a report to the police leading to her arrest.

The State is expected to call two witnesses.
