Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) Optometry Clinic is conducting a community outreach programme by providing free eye screening and giving reading glasses.
Speaking to H-Metro, Dr Claudio Mutuwa, who is coordinating the programme, said the objective of the initiative is to help people that can’t afford eye screening.
“The programme seeks to help the less fortunate in society. There are many people suffering out there and cannot afford money to get medical treatment.
“The other purpose is to fulfil our teaching in terms of outreach eye screening while at the same time benefiting the society as they get to know their visual status, pathology and refractive error (for surgery or glasses),” he said.
“We also give free reading glasses to people who we find with problems that need glasses. This is to help people who cannot afford to buy these glasses in shops.”
The Dr said they were facing challenges which affected the smooth running of the programme.
“The institution is facing some problems in running the programme smoothly, which include shortage of qualified teaching staff, accessibility to patients and teaching equipment,” he said.
