A PROMINENT Victoria Falls businessman, due to marry a third wife on Friday, has been dragged to the magistrate’s court for failing to take care of his daughter with his second wife.Misheck Mpofu, 58, owns a popular flea market here and other businesses in Gokwe and Manjolo in Binga.
He will tie the knot with his new lover Chandu Precious Nyathi, 46, at Victoria Falls Magistrate’s Court on Friday, according to the wedding banns issued last week.
He separated with second wife Loveness Nyoni, the mother of the girl, nearly 10 years ago.
Nyoni told magistrate Sharon Rosemani that she is pained that while she helped her former husband in 2000 to build the flea market which accommodates 300 traders, their daughter is now living in poverty.
His other children were said to be leading lavish lives.
She claimed that the minor’s father has been paying $50 for her upkeep, but refusing to take her to hospital or school.
“For five years I have suffered with our daughter because he has only been paying $50 for her upkeep and refusing to take her to hospital,” Nyoni told the court.
She blamed Mpofu’s lover, Nyathi, who she said would not allow her to speak to her former husband about their daughter.
In response, Mpofu said he was not making much from his business.
“I am a businessman and own a flea market where I get $434 because business is on a downturn. They buy me lunch and give me 100 litres of fuel per month at work. I have three children with my first wife and two with current wife and all are going to school,” said Mpofu.
Rosemani ordered Mpofu to pay $160 as maintenance per month starting next month, down from $631 that Nyoni was demanding.
The businessman was also ordered to pay his daughter’s school fees.
