A Gokwe couple who lost $4,500 at gun point to a gang of four robbers, dramatically turned the tables by pursuing the gang and eventually effecting a citizen’s arrest on one of the suspects.
The couple, Farai Machengere, and his wife, Memory Tekere, 32, who operate a tuck shop at Copper Queen farm, were assisted by relatives and some villagers to apprehend the suspect.
However, the couple did not recover their money and police investigations are progressing.
Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident that occurred on Tuesday at around 2am at Copper Queen, Gokwe South.
He said four men teamed up and proceeded to Machengere’s tuck shop.
Insp Mahoko said:
“The gang found Machengere seated with his wife, Tekere, at their tuck shop. The suspects forcibly gained entry through an unlocked door and pointed a pistol at Machengere. They ordered him to lie down on the floor while demanding cash from the wife, Tekere”.
Insp Mahoko said Tekere pointed to the cash box and the suspects took $4,500 and fled the scene.
He said on the same day, Machengere later teamed up with his relatives and made a follow-up.
They managed to trace one of the suspects whom they arrested and surrendered him to the police.
“A report was made and the suspect was taken into police custody. Investigations are in progress.
Police are appealing to all shop operators to deposit large sums of many in banks to avoid such incidents from occurring,” said Insp Mahoko.
