GWANDA provincial magistrate Sheila Nazombe has ordered prison officers to get toy wire cars for two suspected carjackers to play with during their time in prison.
Nazombe directed the prison officers to look for wires so that the two suspects, Nkosilathi Nyathi, 21, and Godknows Moyo, 18, of Gwanda Town, make themselves toy wire cars.
Nazombe said this after the two claimed that they took people’s cars just for “joy rides” and intended to take them back to the owners afterwards.
She said giving the suspects wire cars would accord them an opportunity to enjoy “driving” around.
“Are we talking about real cars or toys? Did you ever have an opportunity to play with wire cars when you were growing up? It looks like you did not quite enjoy it,” charged Nazombe.
She added: “Today you are going to prison; you should look for wires so that you make wire cars that you will be busy driving during your time in prison. Officers please make sure that you look for the wires for these young men.”
The court heard that the two suspects, who are charged with robbery, on different occasions between September and December this year, stole cars belonging to five people but all the vehicles were recovered.
The two suspects are facing five counts of theft of cars and will next appear in court on 17 December.
Moyo also has a separate case of robbery and the matter has since been referred to the regional court for trial.
“Hopefully when you come back, you would have enjoyed playing with the wire cars,” said Nazombe.
The court heard that Nyathi and Moyo stole some of the vehicles using duplicate keys while the other was hotwired.
“The other vehicle was parked but I managed to take it and drive around after I used a key of another vehicle. I intended to take it back to its owner,” said Moyo.
The two were arrested after police got a tip-off from members of the public on Moyo and Nyathi’s whereabouts.
