Busters Sports Club to host BMX national championships

At least 65 riders are expected to compete for national team slots that will afford them an opportunity to represent Zimbabwe at next year’s international competitions.

In a telephone interview yesterday, the Zimbabwe BMX Association chairman Andrew Donaldson said riders who would have accumulated most points stand a chance to make it into Team Zimbabwe.

“Everything is set for the competition and this will be the first competition of the year. Busters have held tournaments of this magnitude before and their race course is very good.

“We are expecting more than 60 riders to participate at the competition. What will happen is that we will consider total points for each rider the whole year and those with the highest points will make it into the national team,” said Donaldson.

Some of the riders who are expected to participate at the World Championships in New Zealand later this year who include Kirsten du Plooy, Savanna Mason, Dan van Rooyen and national team coach Tafi Mashingaidze, are expected to compete at Busters.

Bulawayo’s Matthew Noach, Tyla-Shae Donaldson and Matt Denslow are some of the riders to look out for at the competition.

Pete Johnstone who was in terrific form last season is also expected to participate at the competition.

Meanwhile, budding Bulawayo BMX rider Blair Loui-Loren Maseko who won bronze at last year’s Africa Challenge held in Harare said he is ready for the competition.

Maseko said his wish was to represent Zimbabwe at the World Championships and bring medals to Bulawayo.

“The guys at the club taught me the basic things after seeing the potential I have. I have been competing at club races and I feel I’m ready for the weekend competition.

“My target is to start the year on a bright note and collect as many points as possible so that I make it into the national team,” said Maseko.
