BUSTERS have won the Hartsfield Independence-Easter Rugby Festival played at Hartsfield Rugby Ground in Bulawayo.
The victors, Old Miltonians (OMs), Western Panthers and Bulldogs clashed in a round-robin format on Saturday. The tournament was the last pre-season event before the start of the National Rugby League (NRL) season this weekend.
A psyched-up Busters thrashed Bulldogs 60-0 in the opening game, accounted for Western Panthers 35-0 and OMs 22-7.
OMs were second on the standings after winning two games and losing one while Western Panthers came third. Bulldogs came last after failing to record a victory in the tournament.
Western Panthers coach George Mukorera said he hoped to get his full squad before the start of the season.
“I have been using juniors because most of our senior guys haven’t been practising with us but I hope they will join the rest of the team soon. I am positive we will be there for the season opener,” said Mukorera.
Busters are favourites to reach the NRL final as they seek to end Harare Sports Club and Old Georgians’ dominance.
Busters have the likes of Tapiwa Mangezi and the Ferrera brothers Jan and Schlak expected to lead the side this year.
