Butchery attendant dies in fire

Midlands Bureau

A 20-year-old Lower Gweru butchery attendant was burnt to death after a fire broke out in the butchery on Tuesday evening.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident.

“We confirm having received a report of a 20-year-old man’s death in an inferno,” he said.

“The incident took place at a butchery at Mission Business Centre, Lower Gweru, on Tuesday at around 8:30 pm.”

Inspector Mahoko said Leeroy Mpofu of Guduza Village, Lower Gweru, was employed by Nkosana Sibanda as a butchery

attendant at Mission Business Centre.

“On the fateful night, Darlington Mufundisi who works in a neighbouring shop heard a loud sound and some screams from the

butchery,” he said.

Mufundisi went outside and discovered that the butchery was on fire. Mpofu was trapped inside.

“He alerted other people who were at the business centre. They all gathered and tried to put out the fire but all efforts were in

vain,” he said.

Inspector Mahoko said the police attended the scene, leading to the recovery of Mpofu’s remains inside the butchery.

Investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire.
