BUY Zimbabwe and International Youth Foundation have launched a job creation programme aimed at imparting qualified youths with leadership skills and entrepreneurship opportunities.
Buy Zimbabwe chief executive officer Mr Munyaradzi Hwengwere said yesterday that the programme was targeting young people aged between 18 and 35 years with tertiary qualifications.
“Together with our partner International Youth Foundation, we’ve launched an employability programme where we’ll be training young people with qualifications on leadership skills and entrepreneurship opportunities.
“We’re targeting to train 800 youths across the country by the end of the year. Under the first phase of the programme we’ll train 250 youths on leadership and managerial skills,” said Mr Hwengwere.
“We appreciate that the qualifications they get from tertiary institutions afford them the opportunity to gain technical skills but lacking managerial or leadership skills.”
Mr Hwengwere said the programme was focusing on ensuring youths get exposure and increase their employment chances as well as broadening their entrepreneurship opportunities.
He said the programme also seems to leverage on the influence and spending power of tertiary education students and promoting consumption of locally manufactured products.
Mr Hwengwere said Buy Zimbabwe would also court some companies to provide the youths with internship.
The programme is set to expose young people to production processes and provide an opportunity for job-related learning through facilitating internship for relevant skills.
Mr Hwengwere said the programme targets qualified youths from accounting, entrepreneurship, economics, marketing, banking and finance fields among others with a bias on females.
“The programme has already started in Harare, and in the next couple of weeks to come we’ll be coming to Bulawayo,” he said.
