on finished imported basic commodities citing an unproductive industry have not taken time to understand the motive behind the minister’s decision.
Our local industry deserves all the support that the Finance Ministry can give it at policy level and bring that together with our efforts at Buy Zimbabwe then you get a thriving and competitive industry.
An inconsistent policy environment that was harming our already bruised industry influenced the decision by Minister Biti. We are already seeing the positive side of the re-introduction of duty with capacity utilisation already increasing by about 10 percent between 2010 and 2011 and if we continue to work together in the same spirit we can increase this to over 65 percent in the coming year.
Currently, what we can do as consumers is to support Minister Biti’s move by supporting our local brands.
With the Buy Zimbabwe Week promotion having roared into life this week under the theme “Buy Zimbabwe, Save a Job”, the call is on us as consumers to participate fully.
The promotion seeks to support goal number 3 of the Millennium Development Goals for full employment by a sustainable local industry.
While the Buy Zimbabwe Week promotion is a sales-driven initiative designed to increase purchases of local goods during the festive season, it is also an opportunity for Buy Zimbabwe partners to increase awareness for their brands through roadshows, in-store demos and the media.
The roadshows are designed to take the Buy Zimbabwe message and assure consumers that there are indeed numerous quality local products that are available on the local market at competitive prices, bringing lots of spot prizes to lucky shoppers.
These awareness roadshows which kicked off yesterday have already attracted a lot attention in shopping malls in and around Harare.
We have also supported the roadshows with call-in programmes that will ensure that consumers get to interact with their favourite local brands.
During the call-in radio programmes, lucky listeners stand a chance to win the numerous hampers kindly sponsored by Buy Zimbabwe partners.
I encourage local consumers to continue looking out for brands from Lyons, National Foods, Tanganda, Schweppes, Olivine, Obel, ZFC, Turnall, TN Bank, Mazda, Zesa Enterprises, Brodacom and Capri and they stand a chance to win the fabulous spot prizes and the grand prize of a remarkable Capri freezer. Purchases of FMCGs are from any OK retail store nationwide.
Let us all continue to support local industry.
God Bless our nation.
