SINCE the advent of the Second Republic and its policy of decentralising state events, a wave of positive change has swept across Zimbabwe, with numerous cities and provinces experiencing the benefits of hosting these significant national gatherings.

This shift has not only injected fresh energy into local economies, but has also spurred crucial infrastructure development, leaving a lasting legacy for communities long after the celebrations have ended.

These high-profile gatherings bring an influx of visitors, boosting local businesses and injecting much-needed revenue into the economy.

Beyond the immediate financial benefits, however, hosting national events elevates a city’s profile, showcasing its infrastructure, capabilities, and cultural attractions to a wider audience.

Bulawayo has consistently benefited from this strategy, and once again found itself bathed in the national spotlight as it hosts the National Youth Day commemorations on Friday.

This latest event follows a pattern of Bulawayo increasingly being chosen as a venue for significant national gatherings, a testament to the city’s capacity to handle large-scale events and its growing importance within the nation.

The influx of attendees for National Youth Day, from across the country, brings with it a welcome boost to local businesses, from hotels and restaurants to transport providers and vendors.

Beyond the immediate economic impact, however, the event offers Bulawayo a platform to showcase its unique character and attractions, further solidifying its position as a key player in Zimbabwe’s cultural and political landscape.

Preparing for these events often necessitates improvements to infrastructure, such as roads, stadiums, and accommodation facilities. These upgrades can leave a lasting positive legacy for the city and its residents.

This event, which marks the third major national gathering in the city within four years, cementing Bulawayo’s resurgence as a key player in the nation’s political and social landscape will run under the theme: “Empower Youth, Secure the Future.”

National Youth Day is celebrated on February 21 each year to reflect on issues affecting young people in Zimbabwe. The national event upholds the principles of effective youth participation.

President Mnangagwa will preside over this year’s main National Youth Day celebrations to be held at Barbourfields Stadium.

Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, said the event will provide a platform for young people to interact with President Mnangagwa.

“The nation is informed that the 2025 National Youth Day Celebrations will be held at Barbourfields Stadium, Bulawayo, from 20 to 21 February, in line with the Second Republic’s policy of rotating national events.”

Dr Muswere said young people will showcase their talents, businesses, and contributions to national development, raise awareness on the dangers of drug and substance abuse, and promote commitment and investment in youth development initiatives, programmes, and projects.

“Running under the theme ‘Empower Youth, Secure the Future’, the main event on Friday is expected to attract a total of 20 000 youths drawn from the country’s nine provinces, with the rest of the youths in all provinces following proceedings in real-time at designated Vocational Training Centres and institutions of Higher Learning,” he said.

Dr Muswere stated that foreign visitors, including ministers and youth council representatives from selected African countries, are expected to attend the event.

“The pre-celebrations events on 20 February 2025 will attract an estimated total of 5 000 youths drawn from schools and institutions of higher and tertiary education within Bulawayo Metropolitan Province and the adjoining provinces.

“Highlights of the day will include a sporting and cultural fiesta, youth exhibitions, a clean-up campaign programme, a community outreach initiative on drug and substance abuse, and the distinctive Ixhiba/Nhanga/Gota exposition by the First Lady, Amai Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa,” he said.

Bulawayo had previously hosted the first-ever devolved Independence Day celebrations in 2022 and the Zanu PF People’s Conference in December last year, demonstrating a growing confidence in the city’s capacity to handle major events and a renewed focus on the city by national leaders.

The influx of national figures, including Government officials, party members, and youth representatives, brought a palpable energy to Bulawayo.

Local businesses will benefit from the increased activity, with hotels booked to capacity and restaurants bustling with patrons.

Beyond the immediate economic boost, the commemorations also offer an opportunity for Bulawayo to showcase its infrastructure, its cultural heritage, and the warmth of its people to a national audience.

The choice of Bulawayo as the venue for this important national event carries symbolic weight.

The city, often referred to as the “City of Kings,” has a rich history and a distinct identity.

For years, Bulawayo felt somewhat marginalised from the centre of power, but the recent series of events signals a potential shift.

By hosting these gatherings, the city is not only being recognised for its logistical capabilities, but also being symbolically re-integrated into the national narrative.

Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary Mr Paul Nyoni also commended Government for its policy to rotate national events across all the country’s provinces, saying it promotes local economies while fostering national cohesion and development.

“As we host National Youth Day, there is a deliberate policy to procure goods and services from service providers in Bulawayo.

“The event will also promote artistes and even the Master of Ceremony will be from Bulawayo. There will be a deliberate policy to promote youth-led enterprises from Bulawayo and the ecosystem within the city will also benefit from this event.

“Also, people will want to use the accommodation while others will use the transport so the hospitality sector will benefit from hosting this event,” said Mr Nyoni.

National Youth Day itself holds particular significance. It is a day to celebrate the contributions of young people to the nation’s development and to acknowledge their aspirations for the future.

Holding the commemorations in Bulawayo provides a platform for young voices from across the country to be heard and for their concerns to be addressed.

It is important to note that the successful execution of major events in quick succession underscores Bulawayo’s ability to rise to the occasion.

This latest event also serves as a reminder of the importance of investing in the next generation and empowering them to take their place in shaping Zimbabwe’s destiny.

This deliberate focus on local talent and businesses underscores the broader economic impact of such events.

By prioritising youth-led enterprises and local service providers, the National Youth Day celebrations not only offer a platform for national recognition, but also directly stimulates Bulawayo’s economy.

The influx of visitors will create a ripple effect, benefiting various sectors from hospitality and transportation to retail and entertainment, further solidifying the city’s reputation as a viable hub for large-scale gatherings.

This boost to local businesses, coupled with the national exposure for Bulawayo’s young entrepreneurs and artists, undoubtedly reinforces the city’s growing economic and cultural significance.
