A 35-year-old man from Bulawayo’s Lobenvale suburb is accused of turning violent, allegedly attacking and strangling his cousin following an argument over a missing mobile phone.
Nkosilathi Chokoza appeared before Bulawayo Provincial Magistrate Mr Isheunesu Mathoba facing a charge of physical abuse.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on US$100 bail. The matter was remanded to June 25.
Prosecutor Ms Josephine Gurazhira told the court that the complainant, David Thabiso Dube (43), a self-employed businessman from Sauerstown, survived the attack but sustained serious injuries.
He was later rushed to hospital after suffering head and shoulder injuries.
Ms Gurazhira said the incident occurred on June 6, 2026, at around 8pm at Chokoza’s home in Lobenvale.
“A fierce misunderstanding arose when Chokoza confronted Dube, aggressively demanding his mobile phone.
Chokoza claimed that the gadget had been stolen by Dube’s girlfriend. As the verbal altercation escalated, Chokoza allegedly lost his temper. In a fit of rage, he picked up a brick and struck Dube twice on the head and once on the shoulder,” said Ms Gurazhira.
The court heard that the assault did not stop there. It is alleged that Chokoza went on to strangle his cousin while he lay on the ground.
After overpowering him, Chokoza reportedly searched Dube and took his black Itel A90 mobile phone.
Ms Gurazhira said Dube was later rescued and taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment.
A medical affidavit detailing the extent of his injuries is expected to be presented in court as evidence.
The total value of the stolen phone and other items is estimated at US$120, and nothing has been recovered.
