A 23-YEAR-OLD man from Cowdray Park has been arrested for terrorising Bulawayo in a string of armed robberies targeting cellphones, cash and other valuables.
Learmore Sibanda was caught by detectives and is believed to be part of a dangerous gang that includes Farai Sibanda (40) of Cowdray Park, another suspect only known as Prosper, and Nhlanhla Ncube, who is already behind bars on remand.
“The gang has been wreaking havoc in Bulawayo since March,” said Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele. “They have been using weapons to rob unsuspecting victims of phones, money and other goods.”
After intense questioning, Learmore led police to a second-hand cellphone dealer, Dube Lungisani (37) of New Lobengula, who operates at the corner of Herbert Chitepo Street and Leopold Takawira Avenue. Lungisani had allegedly bought several of the stolen phones.
“This led to the recovery of some of the stolen property,” added Msebele.
Police are still hunting down Prosper and Farai, who remain on the run.
“We are appealing to anyone with information on their whereabouts to report to the nearest police station,” said Msebele. “We also urge the public to stop buying second-hand phones. You risk buying stolen property and facing arrest.”
The net is closing in. It’s only a matter of time.
