Byo women beat Matabeleland North

Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise organised the game in a bid to revive women’s cricket in the region.

Bulawayo won the first Twenty20 game by 26 runs. They had won the toss, elected to bat first and managed 96 runs from 20 overs after losing seven wickets.

Luveve High School’s Andile Mlalazi scored 34 runs in that game and took six wickets in two days.

Matabeleland North, who were playing their first competitive game, only managed 70 runs for the loss of three wickets.
Victor Mhlanga, the Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise assistant area manager, said they were impressed with the level of competition exhibited by Matabeleland North girls.

“It was a great competition and Matabeleland North players deserve a pat on their back as they fought as a team and going for 70 runs with a loss of three wickets shows that they just need more matches to get it right. They were just playing cricket for the first time unlike their Bulawayo counterparts who play in the schools league.

“As a franchise, we are going to make sure that they continue playing lots of competitive games so that they perfect their cricket,” Mhlanga said.

In the second game which was played on Saturday, Bulawayo won the toss and opted to field.

Matabeleland North were not as lucky as they were on Friday as they were restricted to 35 runs from 20 overs having lost seven wickets.

Bulawayo went on to win the match by 10 wickets after scoring 36 runs.

The Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise chief operations officer Samu Nkiwane said they would continue with their plans to revive the sport.

“This competition was a success by any standard as it was the first step in terms of reviving women’s cricket as well as taking the sport to all the corners of our region. Women’s cricket has not been active for sometime and after the Bulawayo-Matabeleland North match, we hope to have more games,” Nkiwane said.
