Cabman leads to arrest of cable theft suspects

cables worth over US$22 000 from a Mutorashanga substation.
Police investigations led to the arre-st of the driver of a taxi that was used in the theft who then led them to three other suspects.
The three led police to the buyer of the cables.
For stealing the cables, the three were paid US$920 by the buyer, Webster Muvheyi (22).
Gibson Gurira (32), Foster Muri-ngana (31) and Joel Chiwashira (21) were arrested following the arrest of the taxi driver.
They have since appeared before Chinhoyi magistrate Mr Sam Chitumwa facing charges of contravening the Electricity Act.
Mr Chirumwa remanded the four in custody to Wednesday this week after prosecutor Mr Liberty Gono opposed bail arguing that the four were facing a serious crime.
They were advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
Allegations against the three were that on May 7, Gurira, Muringana and Chiwashira hired Panganayi Mangondo’s taxi from Harare to Mutorashanga.
On arrival they told the driver that they would phone him when they have finished what they wanted to do.
The three went on to cut down two poles and stole cables measuring 2 250 metres and rolled them into bundles.
They took the cables to Muvheyi and received US$920.
Muvheyi was arrested in central Harare and admitted to receiving the cables and led police to his house at Number 9618, Kuwadzana Phase 3.
Police recovered the cables packed in a bag.
The cables weighed 570kg and were valued at US$22 716.
