Cairns fails to make it in South Africa

The touring professional, however, left a mark after on his second outing of the season as he managed to make the cut.

Cairns managed scores of 67, 70, 70 and 74 for a six-under-par total score to pocket R52 852.80 for his efforts.

The Zimbabwean was tied with South Africa’s Ulrich van den Berg, England’s Gary Boyd and Swedish duo of Joakim Lagergren and Peter Hedblom.

Cairns was the only local player in the event and is likely to make another campaign alone in the Africa Open after most of the locals failed to make it in the pre-qualifiers yesterday.

Micky Hough, Ignatious Mketekete, Greg Bentley and Brian Gondo all failed to make it to the finals which tee off tomorrow morning at Fish River Sun Country Club in East London, South Africa.

Bentley, however, came lose to book a place in the 10 slots after he finished on level-par after the single round.

Meanwhile, another Zimbabwean USPGA Tour representative Brendon de Jonge made his fifth straight cut of the season at the Phoenix Open where he finished on position 46 at the Spyglass Hill GC, Pebble Beach GL and Monterey Peninsula CC at the weekend.

The player was taking part in the AT and T Pebble Beach National were he scored rounds of 67, 71, 73 and 72 for a two-under-par total.

And the Zimbabwean duo of Ray Badenhorst and Bret Krog inspired their  Florida Tech team to victory in the Titan Winter Invitational after edging Tampa and Central Al0abama by two strokes in the United States yesterday. The duo, who are members The Panthers, as Florida Tech are affectionately known as, cut the gap thanks to under-par rounds by Kalanquin and Zimbabwean Badenhorst, who shot a one-under 71.

The Panthers entered the event as the defending champions after winning last year’s event by two strokes.

Florida Tech needed the help of another Zimbabwean freshman Krog who added an even-par 72 to give The Panthers a total of 287 on the day.

After shooting an even-par opening round, Badenhorst closed the day with a five-under 67 to move into third place on individual standings.

He trailed just two members of Florida Southern including Tim Crouch, who opened with a record-setting 64 in round one.

Head coach Chris Saltmarsh said they were really itching for the victory.
“We were certainly hungry to get win number two and record back-to-back victories. “I know the guys were hungry to make that happen. It’s just a matter of keeping the pedal to the metal,” Saltmarsh  said.
