After getting tired of his industry peers mistreated by music promoters that want to perform for free, Bulawayo wordsmith Cal_vin wants to lead the way by paying each and every single performer at his Made In Bulawayo concert.
Young artistes in Bulawayo have been usually asked by promoters to perform for free, with many told that they should be satisfied with getting exposure.
After managing to attract a healthy crowd at the Made in Bulawayo concert held at Elite 400 last year, the rapper wants to repeat the feat yet again in 2017.
However, instead of going it alone and reaping all the benefits, the self-proclaimed king of Bulawayo rap wants to share the spoils.
The concert is slated for August 12 at Elite 400.
a?I want to lead by example. For years weave been complaining that promoters donat want to pay acts in Bulawayo and I donat want to go down the same path now that itas my turn. I promise that each and every performer that sets foot on stage will be paid,a? he said.
Cal_vin said after introducing acts like Mawiza and GTi, artistes that have gone on to make headway on the local hip-hop scene, he wanted to bring in other new artistes who would earn just rewards for their efforts.
a?The young guys that usually have to perform for free will be rewarded. It might not be a lot of money because Iam paying for all this from out of my own pocket but everyone will get something.
a?The whole point of the concert is to grow the Bulawayo hip-hop scene and create excitement in the same way that Shoko does in Harare. My travels, especially to Germany last year, inspired me because those people have a whole lot of festivals that actually pay the young artistes in those cities,a? he said. .
