Call for farmers’ market synergies

FARMERS in Nyanga North need support in marketing and selling their produce to help them increase productivity and improve their livelihoods, the constituency’s Member of the House of Assembly, Cde Chido Sanyatwe, has said.

Cde Sanyatwe said Government and other stakeholders must join hands and establish market synergies for farmers as a way of protecting them from dealing with unscrupulous merchants.

“After working so hard to get good yields, farmers in this area sometimes fall prey to deceitful dealers who get the produce for a song and the resell at huge profits. This is shortchanging the farmers, with the desperate ones being ripped off and losing out.

“Nyanga is known for producing potatoes and if Government and other stakeholders intervene by securing markets for the farmers it will go a long way in ensuring that they get the best out of their agricultural enterprises,” said Cde Sanyatwe.

Cde Sanyatwe said organised marketing and coordinated selling of the farmers’ produce will see them contribute significantly towards food security and nutrition in Manicaland Province and the country at large.

Government commissioned the Nyakomba Irrigation Scheme with the aim to increase farmers’ productivity in the district.
