MINING players in Mutasa District that are using the cyanidation process in their operations have been called upon to apply the precautionary principle to avoid leakages of substances which are hazardous to people, livestock and the surrounding environment.
Environmental Management Agency (EMA) Manicaland provincial manager Mr Kingstone Chitotombe said the miners have to carry out their activities responsibly and avoid practices that are harmful.
He urged them to use control mechanisms such as the closed system to avoid leakages as the rain season begins.
“During the rain season we may have flash floods that wash off the effluent into water sources or the surrounding environment.
“Operators are, therefore, required to put up adequate and effective measures to prevent such occurrences because the cyanide is poisonous and harmful to people, livestock and the environment,” said Mr Chitotombe.
He also implored them to properly manage their operations and avoid other activities that are not environmentally friendly.
