INFORMAL traders operating in Mutare’s Central Business District (CBD) have called on the city council to construct additional ablution blocks at market sites to enhance hygiene services in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mutare Informal Traders’ Association (MITA) president, Mr Itai Kariparire said the available facilities are failing to meet the demand, describing it as a health hazard for both the vendors and their customers.
“Ideally, there must be an ablution block at every market site in the CBD like we have near The Manica Post Building. However, it is a cause for concern that there are no such facilities at other markets stalls adjacent to Bata and Choppies Supermarket along Herbert Chitepo Street. This poses a serious health threat to the people who operate there as well as the customers who are not able to wash some fruits they buy at these vending stalls,” said Mr Kariparire.
Mr Kariparire said high hygienic standards must be maintained at all times in public places, hence the call for additional ablution blocks in the city as this also helps in the fight against Covid-19.
