ZANU-PF Politburo member Cde Naison Khutshwekhaya Ndlovu has called on party supporters to throw their weight behind those who have won the just ended primary elections. Cde Ndlovu said it was crucial for every party cadre to work tirelessly so that President Mugabe and Zanu-PF win resoundingly in the forthcoming harmonised elections.
Speaking during a Zanu-PF meeting after the announcement of the primary election results by the provincial chairman, Cde Andrew Langa at the party’s provincial headquarters in Gwanda Town on Wednesday, Cde Ndlovu congratulated the party members for conducting the primary elections in a peaceful manner.
“We would like to congratulate those who have sailed through the primaries and even those who have not won as they have the opportunity to win in the next elections. We need to set aside our differences and campaign vigorously for President Mugabe and the candidates so that the party thunderously wins the polls,” he said.
Cde Ndlovu said the 2008 scenario where the President had fewer votes compared to parliamentary and council candidates in some parts of Matabeleland South Province, should not happen in the forthcoming harmonised elections.
Speaking at the same occasion, Cde Langa also urged those who had won in the primaries to work hard in preparation for the harmonised elections.
“There is no need for you to celebrate now over winning the primaries ahead of your fellow cadres because this was just a family arrangement. We will only celebrate after defeating the opposition parties,” he said.
Cde Langa applauded those who lost in the primaries for accepting the defeat gracefully.
He said the party had not received any complaints so far concerning the primaries.
He said although there were logistical challenges encountered before the start of the elections such as moving presiding officers to polling centres, the problems were quickly addressed.
Cde Langa said the high voter turnout in the primaries was a clear indication that the party was geared for the harmonised elections.
Deputy provincial spokesperson Cde Jabulani Phetshu said the primary elections demonstrated that Zanu-PF was a mature and peaceful party.
In contrast to the MDC-T, whose primary elections were marred by violence, Cde Phetshu said the primary elections had left Zanu-PF stronger than before.
“You have seen the numbers, which show that the party has support and is geared for the elections,” said Cde Phetshu.
