Agriculturalists should organise themselves and assist farmers in accessing relevant farming knowledge to ensure better productivity and help ensure national food security, a senior agriculturalist and researcher has said.University of Zimbabwe Research Board Chairperson Professor Sheunesu Mupepereki emphasised the need to move the country out of the perennial hunger through targeting crops to the right agro-ecological regions.
Prof Mupepereki said this yesterday in an interview on the sidelines of the presentation of his paper titled ‘Zimbabwe’s Perennial Food Insecurity Paradox: Breaking the Jinx”.
“We need to move our country out of the perennial hunger that we have been experiencing. There is need to develop appropriate technologies and take advantage of the plentiful knowledge in the country to train farmers in addition to technical and financial assistance,” said Prof Mupepereki.
He said academics should make noticeable contribution to agriculture than spending time at institutions of learning reading papers.
“They should also work with people to apply relevant technologies that will see an increase in production and better livelihood,” said Prof Mupepereki.
In recent years, Zimbabwe has been faced with perennial food challenges and lack of knowledge based farming practices has been one of the causes.
