HARARE City Council Human Resources and General Purposes Committee chairperson, Councillor Kudzai Kadzombe, said there is a need to motivate and upgrade women in all Council’s departments.
Addressing a meeting of female Council employees in managerial positions at Town House, Kadzombe encouraged them to support and empower each other.
The meeting was held as part of Women’s Month celebrations.
She condemned lobbying saying it denigrates women in positions of influence.
“There is a need for women professionals to be supported for them to rise through the ranks to critical positions in the organisation.
“This is not a fight against men, but it’s just for women to empower each other so that they can fill all those positions,” she said.
The women called on the Council to come up with policies, which encourage and support female employees, within the local authority. Kadzombe added that job recruitment, evaluation and promotion policies should be fair to all employees, regardless of gender.
“If a woman has the capacity to perform the duty, she has to be given the job. Recently, the City launched the School of Excellence where 28 women graduated and the programme gave opportunities to women to upgrade their professional skills.”
Kadzombe said women in managerial positions should mentor young women to follow similar paths.
