“One of the key infrastructure areas that we must address to accommodate growth is road widening and upgrading,” said Mr Toriro. “All these major distributors must be upgraded to dual carriageways,” he added.
The constricted roads are a cause for concern for motorists during peak hours as traffic movement is restricted causing congestion and unnecessary accidents. There have also been calls to introduce bus lanes on the major carriageways to reduce congestion and accidents.
Mr Toriro said there was also a need for more pass roads to be constructed to avoid congesting the CBD with pass-through traffic.
“These can be localised by passes or can be city-wide if we adopt the ring-road concept such as Harare Drive. We must now complete the missing links on Harare Drive,” he said.
CBD revitalisation, he said, could be achieved through creating additional parking space. He said in other world cities private companies integrate public parking in buildings “and charge reasonable fees to motorists”.
