IN-FORM Ghanaian winger Frank Agyemang is eager to continue his resurgence and inspire Dynamos as they attempt to end Ngezi Platinum Stars’ impressive unbeaten run in a high-stakes Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash at Rufaro Stadium this afternoon.
The platinum miners arrive in the capital riding a remarkable 14-match unbeaten streak, to underline their status as one of the most consistent sides in the league this season.
But Dynamos, buoyed by home support and desperate to revive their fading title push, believe they have what it takes to halt the Mhondoro-based outfit.
Agyemang has been one of the standout performers for the Glamour Boys this term, contributing four goals and several assists, and the pacy wide man is expected to shoulder more responsibility in the absence of injured leading scorer Jairos Kasondo.
“We know they haven’t lost even a match but this is going to be a different thing. We are going to score them and aim to win against them,” said Agyemang.
The Ghanaian flopped in his first season at DeMbare last year when he finished with no goal to his name. However, he has looked a different player this campaign, showing confidence and a growing understanding with his teammates.
He was involved in the own-goal at Chahwanda last week before their tie against Hardrock was abandoned following crowd trouble late in the second half and looks to pick up from where he left.
“What I can say is that it’s all from God. I give thanks to my teammates too,” he said.
“For the first season last year I didn’t settle in quickly. That’s why I couldn’t perform well. But this season I can say obviously I am adjusting. I already said it. This season I am going for the top goal scorer and I am working towards it.”
The Glamour Boys will be keen to put that episode behind them and focus on improving their recent form, having managed just one win in their last seven matches.
That inconsistency has seen Dynamos slip to sixth place on the table with 21 points from 13 games, trailing log leaders CAPS United by seven points.
But Agyemang has not lost optimism.
“This season we want to win the league. So, this weekend we are aiming to win this game against Ngezi Platinum Stars. We need to win and get maximum points.
“Thanks to the supporters. They always encourage us and we love them when they come in numbers to Rufaro Stadium. We like their support,” said Agyemang.
But Ngezi Platinum Stars have proved a difficult opponent for Dynamos.
Since their promotion to the top flight in 2016, the platinum miners have dominated this fixture, recording eight wins compared to Dynamos’ three, with seven matches ending in draws.
The visitors are currently third on the log with 26 points, just two behind the leaders, and come into the match full of confidence following a strong run of results.
As a result, Dynamos coach Genesis Mangombe is not taking anything for granted.
“We have to take this game very seriously. We need to look at our performances and make sure we correct the mistakes that have cost us points in recent matches,” Mangombe said.
On the other side, Ngezi Platinum Stars coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziva has continued to impress by moulding a competitive team despite significant challenges at the start of the season.
The club lost several senior players and has been operating under a FIFA-imposed transfer ban, forcing them to rely heavily on their development ranks.
Young talents such as Tanaka Munemo, Orlando Zvavarevi and Ashwin Karengesha have stepped up, while experienced midfielder Marvellous Mukumba has provided leadership.
Mutiwekuziva believes teamwork has been the cornerstone of their success.
“I always tell them that nothing beats team work regardless of quality in football,” said Mutiwekuziva.
“That is why it is referred to as a football team. The word team becomes very important. I always tell them if they work together like what they are doing no one will stop you and it’s proving that point to me.
“No one beats a team that comprises individuals that work together, who share ideas and responsibilities on the field of play. That is why we are not even worried about the transfer ban, especially for me as a coach,” said Mutiwekuziva
