THE Warriors’ recent outing against Nigeria may have ended in a 2-0 defeat, but it may have also unearthed a crucial solution to a long-standing selection puzzle.
In the aftermath of the Unity Cup clash in London, coach Kaitano Tembo has thrown his weight behind Sean Fusire, presenting the young midfielder-turned-defender as a strong option for the right-back position.
However, with endorsement comes expectation.
Fusire’s emergence now sets the stage for a compelling battle, as he must prove he can outperform the more seasoned Emmanuel Jalai.
The Durban City man has, over a longer span, established himself as a reliable and trusted figure in that role.
For Fusire, the message was clear after the Nigeria tie, he is ready to work. While the result was disappointing, the player believes the performance offered a blueprint for improvement, provided they sharpen their edge in front of goal.
“For starters we need to be more clinical. We created a lot of chances against Nigeria. We played in terms of being on the ball very well,” Fusire said.
What makes this particular duel fascinating is the similarity in style. Fusire, who is also comfortable operating in midfield, possesses attributes that allow him to be strong defensively while still contributing to the attack, the exact same characteristics that have long defined Jalai’s game.
Fusire was candid about where the team fell short at the Theatre of Dreams. He insisted that wasting opportunities left the door open for their formidable opponents.
“We should have broken them down, and also been more threatening,” he added.
The Warriors conceded early in the first half and again after the interval, defensive lapses that Fusire believes must be eradicated if the team is to progress. He stressed the need to avoid mistakes at the back and keep the game tight.
Coach Tembo is likely to rotate his squad for Saturday’s third-place play-off against India, giving other players a run.
But for Fusire, the Nigeria clash has already served as a sufficient proving ground. Having been away from the international setup for a while, the player is simply happy to be back in the Warriors squad, embracing the opportunity to play international football again.
“It’s been good. I have enjoyed it here. Especially because I have been away for a while. It’s been nice to be back, spending time with the boys. It was good to get my first minutes. I really enjoyed it,” Fusire said.
But what are the implications for Jalai, does that mean he will need to be second fiddle to Fusire. Jalai is not bothered but rather excited with the development of his fellow Warrior.
“I am happy with the way he committed himself in the game. The nation needs depth and experience in all departments and it’s good to have him developing.
“As for myself the goal is always one, to keep on improving and adding value to the team in all aspects.
“Coming in to represent the nation is always a point of honour and reflection of the hardwork we always put into,” said Jalai.
