CO-HOSTS Canada and Morocco are set for a fiery Round of 16 showdown at NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas tonight, as both nations chase a quarter-final berth at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Kick-off is at 7pm (Zimbabwean time).
The Canucks are riding high after finishing second in Group B and producing a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa in the Round of 32, with Stephen Eustaquio scoring a 92nd-minute winner.
Known for their intense high press, athleticism, set-piece threat and never-say-die mentality, Canada have exceeded expectations in their first-ever knockout-stage appearance and head into the Round of 16 full of belief as they aim to create more history by reaching the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Morocco topped Group C with two wins and a draw in a disciplined campaign and they showed their resilience in the Round of 32, advancing past the Netherlands on penalties following a 1-1 draw. The Atlas Lions, the reigning African champions, will bring their trademark tactical organisation, physical intensity, rapid counter-attacks and passionate team spirit as they look to replicate their fairy-tale run to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Canada are without midfielder Ismaël Koné for the remainder of the tournament after he suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in the group stage.
However, captain Alphonso Davies, who missed the entire group stage with a hamstring injury, came off the bench against South Africa and is expected to be available, though he may not start.
Morocco, on the other hand, have no fresh injury concerns heading into the Round of 16 which will boost coach Mohamed Ouahbi’s team selection.
Key players such as Achraf Hakimi, Noussair Mazraoui, Yassine Bounou, Chadi Riad, Brahim Díaz, Azzedine Ounahi and Ismael Saibari are all fully available.
WHAT WAS SAID?
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch: “Preparing for Morocco is like a gory, horrible nightmare. They are one of the best teams in the world right now,” Marsch said about the North African side.
“Their organisation, their technical quality, their squad depth . . . it’s extremely difficult. But we want to be here and we expect to be here. So, we know that everybody’s going to write us off, and in that is an opportunity.”
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi: “If we get things wrong, we’ll go home. Canada are dangerous. They have intensity, physical power and they fight until the last second. We must respect them and be at our best,” Ouahbi said about the co-hosts.
“No one can stop us if we play our game. But Canada made history by beating South Africa — they have momentum and nothing to lose. We have to be serious from minute one.”
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Stephen Eustaquio, Canada: The FC Porto midfielder has been one of the Canucks’ standout performers in the tournament and he scored the dramatic winner against South Africa. Eustaquio could pose a major threat to Morocco with his long-range shooting, intelligent positioning and ability to arrive late into the box from deep.
Ismael Saibari, Morocco: The new Bayern Munich attacker has been one of the best attackers in the tournament, having scored three goals through excellent movement and great finishing. Saibari can be deadly against Canada with his intelligent late runs into the box, ability to find space between the lines and clinical finishing from distance or inside the area.
