UAE mourns Lake Kariba Ferry Disaster

THE United Arab Emirates has expressed its sincere condolences and solidarity with Zimbabwe following the capsizing of a passenger ferry on Lake Kariba, an incident that killed 94 people, left dozens injured and others still missing.

In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended condolences to the families of the victims, while expressing sympathy to Zimbabwe and its people for the tragedy. The UAE also conveyed wishes for a speedy recovery for all those injured.

The capsized ferry, which reportedly carried passengers and goods and went down after being struck by strong waves, has prompted a national response, including ongoing search, rescue and recovery operations on the lake.

The Government has also intensified efforts to support affected families and address the circumstances surrounding the disaster.

Formal investigations are underway, with authorities examining key operational and compliance issues.

“The United Arab Emirates has expressed its sincere condolences and solidarity with the Republic of Zimbabwe over a capsized passenger ferry in Lake Kariba, which resulted in dozens of deaths, injuries, and missing people,” said the UAE.

In the statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) expressed its sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and to the Republic of Zimbabwe and its people over this tragedy, as well as its wishes for a speedy recovery for all the injured.

President Mnangagwa has since declared the accident a State of Disaster, enabling the Government to mobilise disaster response structures to provide urgent assistance, including funeral services and medical and psycho-social support for those affected by the trauma.

Meanwhile, recovery operations continue to involve multiple agencies working together, including civil protection teams and specialised units, as authorities intensify their efforts to locate missing persons and recover additional remains.
