The 2026 Cannes Film Festival is known for its high-brow cinema and rigid protocols, but last night, May 13, the Croisette traded its tuxedoes for casual chic and its silence for the roar of engines.
In a historic midnight screening celebrating the 25th anniversary of the original 2001 “The Fast and the Furious”, the festival transformed into a massive, emotional tribute to a legacy that has defined a generation of action cinema.
The atmosphere inside the Grand Lumière theatre shifted from celebratory to deeply poignant the moment Vin Diesel took the microphone.
Visibly moved, Diesel delivered a heartbreakingly honest tribute to his late co-star and brother, Paul Walker.
“I pray that in your life you have a brother like Paul,” Diesel told the audience.
“It wasn’t on the script at first that this blond-haired, blue-eyed guy would be a brother to me. It’s so hard for me to watch it because there’s so many moments in this movie that you see, that I see differently.”
“The scene that you see, I see the moment Pablo told me he had a 1-year-old daughter.”
The sentiment resonated through the room as Diesel was joined on stage by original cast members Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster. However, the night’s most powerful presence was Meadow Walker, Walker’s daughter.
The pair shared a long, tearful hug on the red carpet that left onlookers and photographers visibly shaken.
Diesel credited Meadow for his presence at the festival, stating that she was the one who wouldn’t let him represent the brotherhood alone.
“She said, ‘I’m 27, and I’m watching this film that my father made at 27,’ and I thought, ‘How profound’. Meadow has been such a source of strength, and I know he’d be so proud of you.”
A classic recognition
In a move that surprised many, Cannes director Thierry Frémaux officially labeled the 2001 film a classic.
For a franchise that began as a gritty story about stealing DVD players, and was once largely dismissed by critics, receiving such a title at the world’s most prestigious film festival brought Diesel to a state of shock and pride.
The “Fast” family spirit even broke the festival’s legendary dress code. For one night only, the rules were loosened to match the film’s street-racing roots.
Diesel leaned into the moment, sporting a custom leather blazer adorned with “Fast Forever” in rhinestones.
The legacy continues
The evening wasn’t only about looking back. It was about the road ahead. In a bombshell announcement, Diesel confirmed that Universal is officially developing a live-action “Fast & Furious” television series for Peacock.
The project, executive-produced by Diesel alongside franchise architects Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan, aims to protect the integrity of the characters while exploring untold stories of the supporting cast.
One last ride
As the midnight screening concluded, the crowd, who spent the film cheering and singing along to a medley of hits like “See You Again”, gave the cast a 4-minute standing ovation.
Before the lights came on, Diesel offered a final gift to the fans: a firm release date for the 11th and final film.
“Fast Forever” is officially set to release on March 17, 2028.
According to Diesel, this final chapter is a dedicated “thank you” to the fans who have stayed loyal for two and a half decades.
“I’m gonna go and shed a tear real quick, but I just want you all to know, the only reason why we’re making the finale of ‘Fast’ for 2028 is because of every one of you that has given us your hearts and your loyalty.” — iolnews.
