CAPS’ BIG TEST

CAPS United have not beaten Ngezi Platinum Stars in NINE years in the Castle Lager Premiership.

The Green Machine are winless against the Mashonaland West side in the league since 2018.

Amazingly, Makepekepe have only won ONCE against Ngezi Platinum Stars in the league since the Mhondoro side arrived in the Premiership.

That win came in Ngezi Platinum Stars’ first season in the top-flight league in 2017 when the Harare giants won 3-0 at Rufaro on August 20.

CAPS were then the defending champions after having been crowned kings of the domestic Premiership a few months earlier.

What their fans didn’t know was that this was going to be the last time that CAPS United would celebrate a win, in the league, over their plucky rivals.

In the 14 games, which the two sides have played against each other in the league so far, Ngezi Platinum Stars have been the dominant side.

They have won NINE of those matches, lost only once while the other four have ended in draws.

In the past six league matches, Ngezi have won FIVE and drawn the other one.

That dominance will be put to test tomorrow afternoon when the Green Machine arrive at Baobab for what promises to be a tight contest.

For many analysts, this is the match which will provide a proper examination for a CAPS United side who are enjoying a flying start in the championship race.

Such has been their impressive start that the Green Machine will still be top of the table, going into the weekend, even if they lose to Ngezi.

Takesure Chiragwi’s men enjoy a four-point cushion at the top of the table after winning all their four games.

Champions Scottland are in second place in a group which also features Dynamos and Ngezi.

Chiragwi and a good number of his players will be making a return to a stadium which they called home, just a few months ago, when they were still at Ngezi Platinum Stars.

Those players include attack spearhead Obriel Chirinda and Takunda Benhura but they are not the only potent arsenal in the Green Machine line-up. Chiragwi knows that if his men pass this test then they will send a big message to the chasing pack that they really mean business this season.

CAPS United fans recall a similar visit, seven years ago, when their hosts destroyed their championship dreams.

The Green Machine were in control of that race, with just two games remaining.

They had a chance to be crowned champions at Baobab, provided they beat Ngezi, but a 2-3 defeat put them into a tight corner.

It meant they had to beat FC Platinum at home in the final match but a 0-1 defeat at the National Sports Stadium ended their quest for honours.
