FOUR Hwange-based Caps United supporters were on Sunday night involved in a road accident in Hwange, hours after donating a kit to the club in Bulawayo. The supporters had come to watch their team’s goalless draw against Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium. Two of the supporters, the chapter’s chairperson, Georgina Phiri and the driver Edward Museke were admitted to the Colliery Hospital with Phiri being discharged the following day while Museke is still at the hospital where he is reported to have undergone an X-ray as he sustained some head injuries.
Museke is the Caps United national supporters’ association secretary-general.
According to a police source, the driver, is suspected to have fallen asleep while behind the wheel but at the same time speeding just before Kambani Village (Number Three), resulting in the vehicle, a Toyota Mark Two, veering off the road and overturning and rolling a couple of times.
“There were no fatalities but the vehicle was extensively damaged.
“We suspect fatigue and speeding,” said the police source.
The accident came just hours after the Hwange Chapter had presented a brand new kit to Caps United soon after the match at Barbourfields Stadium.
Blessing Gumbo, the Caps United Supporters Association national chairman, wished their colleagues a speedy recovery.
“Our national secretary-general Museke is still admitted to the hospital while the Hwange Chapter chairlady Phiri is now out of hospital and as the supporters association we are mobilising some assistance in cash or kind to be extended to the guys. The team management is also doing the same,” said Gumbo.
He said since they are playing against Hwange in a league match on Sunday, the supporters’ executive and team management representatives will visit Museke in hospital as well as Phiri at her home to offer their moral support.
