SET against the serene beauty of Bulawayo’s landscape, the wedding of Phathisani Nkomo, son of Khesiwe Nkomo, and Banele Mzaca, daughter of Cingiwe Mzaca, was a celebration of love, commitment, and family. The couple chose Lakeside Lifestyle Events as their venue, drawn by its breathtaking views and convenient location. The setting provided a perfect canvas for a day filled with joy and elegance.
A chance meeting on the road to Harare
Their journey began with a serendipitous encounter aboard public transport en route to Harare. Banele fondly recalled their first meeting on November 4, 2020, a moment that would mark the beginning of a four-year love story. What started as a chance meeting soon blossomed into a deep connection, culminating in the heartfelt celebration of their union.

Overcoming long-distance challenges
Planning a wedding is never without its hurdles, and for Phathisani and Banele, distance was a significant one. With both the bride and groom, as well as their matron of honour, living far from Bulawayo, co-ordinating the event required patience, resilience, and a great deal of remote communication. “It was such a challenge to organise things through the phone,” Banele admitted, highlighting the couple’s unwavering commitment to making their day special despite the logistical difficulties.
A day of dusty pink and white
Elegance and charm defined the aesthetic of the day, with a colour scheme of dusty pink and white setting the tone. This palette was reflected in every detail, from the floral arrangements to the exquisite five-tier fruit cake crafted by Heavenly Cakes. The bridal party, composed of five gentlemen and five ladies, added to the visual splendour. Professor Moyo stood proudly as the best man, while Maureen Sthabisiwe Nkomo took on the role of best girl, both contributing to the day’s warmth and grace.

Magical moments and touching vows
Among the many memorable moments, the couple’s favourite was the spirited performance by their bridal team, which they described as “pure magic”. Yet, it was the exchange of vows that truly touched their hearts. “The most touching moment was us saying the vows,” Phathisani shared, his words echoing the emotion felt throughout the ceremony. Another poignant highlight was the opening speech delivered by Uncle Maqhawe, which resonated deeply with all in attendance.
A feast for 250 guests
The celebration was attended by 250 guests, all treated to a sumptuous feast. The main course offered a choice between yellow basmati rice and pap, served alongside coated chicken and beef stew. Complementing the meal were sides of creamed spinach and cinnamon butternut, with fresh salads including coleslaw, chakalaka, and beetroot adding vibrant flavours. The grand five-tier cake provided a sweet and satisfying conclusion to the meal.

Capturing the day
Every moment of the day was beautifully documented by Sweeto Photography and DM Creations, ensuring the memories would last a lifetime. The event was expertly hosted by MC Washie The MC, whose charisma kept the energy high. Entertainment was provided by the lively Sunshine dance group, whose performance, along with the vibrant bridal party, added a joyful rhythm to the celebration. With a budget of US$6 000, the couple proved that love, not extravagance, is the true essence of a wedding. Their honeymoon is planned for December, a fitting continuation of their journey together.
