Ochieson Mutero, a 16-year-old student from Bright Daisies Christian Institute in Chitungwiza, is determined to stay focused on his studies, even after being gifted a Honda Fit for his outstanding performance in the Ordinary Level examinations.
The second of four siblings, Mutero expressed his surprise at achieving eight A grades. His remarkable success has made him the proud owner of a car, a generous gift from school administrator Pastor Daisy Mukariri.
The pastor also leads Emmanuel Fellowship Church, which has made significant investments in education and philanthropy. In an interview after receiving his car, Mutero, who has a driver’s licence, was still in shock after getting the brand-new wheels at 16.
“I still can’t believe that all this has happened in my life; it can only be God,” stated Mutero.
“I also can’t believe that I now own a car at my age; to me, it’s like a miracle, to say the least.
“I am a bookworm who loves studying, and I didn’t know these were the rewards for my hard work. I will keep working hard at A-Level now that I am studying Maths, Biology and Chemistry.”
Despite being a bookworm, Mutero revealed that he still has a social life, which he enjoys.
“I can play football as a winger, and this is one of my hobbies.
I still have time to hang out with my peers because it’s also necessary in life.”
He acknowledged his parents and teachers for his success.
“I can’t thank my teachers and parents enough for all that I have achieved, to be honest.
There are people who helped me get to where I am, and I couldn’t have achieved this alone.
I don’t want to disappoint them, and after finishing my A-Level, I would like to become a physiotherapist,” he added.
He urged fellow learners to prioritise their studies and avoid peer pressure.
“My advice to fellow learners is that we must take our schoolwork seriously, myself included.
“In my case, this is just the beginning because the journey is too long, and I can’t afford to rest on my laurels and pretend as if I have achieved everything,” he emphasised.
Mutero has made history as the first student to receive such a gift after Pastor Mukariri decided to honour excelling learners at the school.
The school is also awarding outstanding teachers.
His school has introduced an initiative where all students are sponsored to get driver’s licenses once they reach the age of 16.
Last year, the school sponsored 64 learners to get licences, and Mutero was among them.
Mutero is not only academically gifted but also a reserved and God-fearing learner destined for greatness, according to his teachers and parents.
