CARITAS Zimbabwe, in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and Child Care is steering a water sanitation programme in Nyanga that will greatly improve public health.
The programme is in line with the 2015 Millennium Development Goal of slashing by half the number of households without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.
Speaking at Nyamhuka Primary School last Friday, Caritas Zimbabwe programmes manager Mr Nhamo Hondoyemoto emphasised on the need for people to practise safe sanitation methods.
“Basic sanitation is something which should be taken seriously for the promotion of the best hygienic practices in our homes and communities at large. It is essential that as Zimbabweans, we help the rest of the world to achieve the Millennium Development Goal 7. For this to be achievable by 2015, there is need for communities to be committed towards the success of all sanitation projects.
“Nyanga is a resort area and it is important that it’s protected from pollution. Sanitation begins with you and I, so let us work together for the betterment of this area and the country at large,” he said.
The event was also attended by officials from the Environmental Management Agency and Nyanga Rural District Council which pledged its support.
Caritas Zimbabwe is a subsidiary of the Roman Catholic Church which stands for relief and development in Zimbabwe.
It also works with other Catholic development agencies in working with people to bring about positive changes in some of the remote areas of Zimbabwe.
