The Bulawayo Theatre, a cultural landmark of the city, came alive on Thursday night as celebrated songbird Carmen Hwarari staged her long-awaited homecoming concert.
Unveiling her new album Listen, Hwarari gave more than a performance, she shared a heartfelt journey of struggle, resilience, and hope for her generation.
From the very first note, it was evident that this was no ordinary show. Supported by a skilled band, she blended moving performances with messages against societal ills, inspiring hope and spirituality.
Her art was both seen and heard. With eye-catching costumes and well-planned choreography, she showed her versatility. Moving easily between different music styles, she proved once again why she is one of Bulawayo’s most dynamic and growing talents.
The concert featured songs like Ngcwele, Broken Glass, Stango, and collaborations such as Ma Africa with Albert Nyathi and Arise Africa with Derrick Mpofu.
The energy was electric. The crowd did not just listen, they joined in, dancing and singing along and the night turned into a big celebration.
The evening also glittered with star power. Mpofu provoked thought with his candid storytelling and performed his hit, Chikwambo, to rapturous applause.
Busi Ncube’s long-awaited return to the local stage proved unforgettable, as the legendary songstress delivered timeless classics like True Love and Sithembeni, reminding all that her magic remains undimmed.
Acclaimed arts ensemble Iyasa added their signature vibrancy, elevating the celebration to even greater heights.
For Hwarari, this was more than just a concert; it was a full-circle moment.
Her journey began at St James High School in Nyamandlovu, where she cut her teeth as a choir leader and cultural club member before touring South Africa and Eswatini.
Later, her academic pursuits saw her graduate with First Class Honours in Music and Musicology from Midlands State University in 2010, training that shone through in her polished stagecraft.
Her 11-track album Listen, first unveiled in Harare in December 2023, has already gained regional acclaim, with a high-profile showcase earlier this year at the BICC Auditorium in Lilongwe, Malawi.
Supported by NBS Bank Malawi, the production featured collaborations with poet Albert Nyathi, Mpofu, and Iyasa, cementing Hwarari’s growing influence beyond Zimbabwe’s borders. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
