CARNAGE ON THE ROADS! Hit-and-Run horror, kombi chaos leave trail of death

B-Metro Reporter

THE 2025 Easter and Independence Holidays have turned deadly as Zimbabweans counted the cost of carnage on the roads—three hit-and-run killings, 384 crashes, and 24 lives lost, with 178 people injured.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released chilling statistics, painting a grim picture of lawlessness, reckless driving, and tragic consequences.

Among the most harrowing was a fatal kombi crash at the 51km peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road on 21 April 2025. A Toyota Hiace carrying 18 passengers veered off the road, flipped, and left a trail of death and destruction. Three passengers died on the spot, and another succumbed at Norton Hospital. Fourteen others were injured in the mid-day mayhem.

But the bloodshed didn’t stop there.

In a disturbing wave of hit-and-run fatalities, the police recorded three shocking incidents in just three days:
• On 19 April, a pedestrian was mowed down along the Mutoko-Chidye dust road. The motorcyclist fled the scene. The victim died at Mutoko Hospital.
• The next day, a man was killed instantly at Tynwald flyover in Harare by an unidentified vehicle that never stopped.
• That same day, a 66-year-old man was hit near the Puma service station in Whitehouse by a Nissan Caravan. He died upon admission at Parirenyatwa Hospital—the driver is still on the run.

National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, is calling out reckless motorists, urging them to stop, render first aid, and report all accidents. “Motorists must act responsibly. These lives could’ve been saved,” he said.
There was a slight drop in fatal accidents from last year (26 down to 21), but the rising injury toll and shocking disregard for life are a cause for concern.

Drive safe—or someone won’t make it home.
