TRAGEDY struck along the Mutare–Masvingo Road on Monday afternoon when a Toyota Hiace kombi veered off the highway and overturned, killing three people and injuring eleven others in a horrific crash.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the fatal accident occurred at around 4:30 PM near the 167km peg, turning a routine journey into a nightmare.
The kombi, carrying 14 passengers, reportedly lost control, swerved off the road to the right, and overturned before crashing onto its left side.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of twisted metal, blood, and panic, as bystanders rushed to pull survivors from the mangled wreckage.
“It was terrifying,” said a witness. “People were screaming… we tried to help, but some were trapped.”
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Silveira Mission Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while the injured were admitted at the same hospital, some reportedly in critical condition.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash as families wait for answers — and the road claims more innocent lives.
