REIGNING Miss Carnival Dananai Chipunza will on October 9 hold a charity dinner at the Rainbow Towers’ VIP Lounge in her first major project since being crowned in May. During the dinner, dubbed “Fund a Future”, the 21-year-old is hoping to mobilise funds and resources to better the lives of orphans living with HIV and Aids.
“I am appealing to people from all sectors to come through and either donate or participate towards helping these children. Having been crowned the inaugural carnival queen, I was presented with an enormous opportunity to give back to the community, which has always been my dream,” she said.
The “Fund a Future” dinner will see the carnival queen selling dinner tables for US$1 000 for 10 people or US$100 per person. Pledges will also be made that will add on to the funds.
Chipunza justified the cost by explaining that she needed to cater for various orphans’ needs.
“We have identified 30 orphans who are living positively with HIV and Aids from various high-density areas in Harare whom we are hoping to sponsor with school fees, educational supplies, health medical treatment. These various bills are supposed to be catered for annually,” she said.
Chipunza also highlighted that she was planning on making the programme sustainable through working with caregivers who will carry it over when her reign ends.
Speaking on the dinner, she gave an insight on what people should expect on the night.
“As an entrepreneur specialising in culinary arts, I have always been big on food. Guests can look forward to treats from a wide variety of mouthwatering dishes. There will be six international chefs specialising in Indian, Brazilian, Chinese, Italian and Portuguese dishes. The other six will be local chefs specialising in local dishes,” she said.
A top chef award will also be presented at the end of the dinner to recognise the chef with the best dish based on votes by guests.
Victoria Falls-based group Mokoomba together with Suluman Chimbetu will provide entertainment at the fund-raising dinner.
