No change to schools’ opening date: Minister

SCHOOLS will open on 8 January 2013 and not on 14 January 2013, the Minister of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, Senator David Coltart has said.
This follows widespread speculation that the opening of schools had been pushed to 14 January.
Chronicle newsroom has in the past few days been receiving numerous phone calls as people inquired about the changes.
Minister Coltart said the school calendar had not changed and school would open as initially planned.
“There have been a number of rumours going around recently that the date of the opening of the first school term in Zimbabwe has changed. This has also been publicised by a local daily paper. These reports are false and misleading, as there has not been any change to the calendar,” he said.

Principals to determine way forward in constitution-making

A Cabinet committee tasked to break the impasse on constitution-making yesterday resolved to refer the outstanding matters to the principals after finding common ground on only two of the 30 contentious issues.
Although Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Eric Matinenga said the committee had made a breakthrough on the outstanding issues, sources who attended yesterday’s meeting said “nothing concrete” came out.
Said Minister Matinenga: “We met and made progress on a lot of issues but some of them are still outstanding. The problem is we have to make a lot of consultations and some of the people who need to be consulted are still on holiday.”
He declined to reveal the issues the seven-member committee had agreed on.
“It is our hope that in two weeks time consultations will be complete and we may know the way forward,” Minister Matinenga said.
