Mtshabezi water pumping hits another snag

BULAWAYO’s celebration over Mtshabezi water has been short-lived as pumping had to be suspended on Sunday, following a problem with the generators.
On Saturday, it seemed as if the problems that had dogged the project over the years had been finally overcome, when 13 000 cubic metres of water were pumped from the dam.
However, stakeholders on site said pumping had to be stopped on Sunday when technicians realised that the generator was being overloaded.
In an interview yesterday, the Minister of Water Resources Management and Development, Dr Samuel Sipepa Nkomo, said he hoped the problem would be rectified by the end of the week.
“We started the pumps and they ran for about three hours when we realised the power rating meter on the generator was going down.
“We had to switch off, when engineers explained that it was like putting a 20 tonne load on a five tonne vehicle. They said it would pull for sometime but would eventually break down,” said Dr Nkomo.
He said electricians were working flat out in a bid to ensure the project would be back on track by the end of the week.Political, traditional leaders to meet to resolve land wrangle
