GMB bosses in grain, cash scams
Felex Share Herald Reporter
SOME Grain Marketing Board officials are reportedly working with syndicates buying maize from villagers and promptly paying their proxies at the expense of poor farmers.
Farmers, mainly from Mashonaland Central Province, are now accusing the officials of exploiting them and giving payment preference to the syndicates.
Given that the bulk of maize bought for a song from farmers is delivered to GMB depots, this has created payment backlog, with farmers alleging the GMB officials were behind the payment delays.
Investigations showed that officials within GMB have agents who move around buying maize from farmers at prices ranging between US$150 and US$185 per tonne.
