CAWA to promote gender equity through golf

focus on issues surrounding diversity in the workplace as well as the 50-50 gender equity programme which is being spearheaded at a regional level.

Programme officer for CAWA Ms Rumbidzayi Chakawata said the event would be open to both men and women as issues relating to gender affects all both males and females. “We want to include the corporate sector as the day has been traditionally celebrated by Government and civil society.

“This golf day will therefore ensure that both women and men in corporate take time to reflect on gender issues in this sector,” she said.

She said in a recent study carried out on the mining sector in Zimbabwe by her organisation revealed that most organisations did not have gender diversity policies in place and holding events such as the golf day allows them to engage women regarding this issue.

She said that her organisation intended to strengthen the data base of mentors during the golf day and is encouraging all women who would like to mentor other women to register their interest.

“We also chose to celebrate this day with a golf day in order to encourage women to break out of the mould and take up sports such as golf in large numbers as it assists in networking and career development,” she said. Ms Chakawata said her organisation has been receiving steady corporate support which shows that there is a genuine interest across the board in Zimbabwe to include women in all areas of Zimbabwe’s economic development.

“In Zimbabwe we do not have a special day where we recognise women, therefore, it is important to take the opportunity to celebrate the achievements that Zimbabwean women have made. We also use this opportunity to highlight the gaps that still exist within our society during International Women’s Day,” she said.

The main purpose of CAWA is to enable African women to develop their own management style, which matches their cultural realities through the sharing of experiences, mentoring and networking in an informal setting in order to increase their participation in decision making positions.

She said the aim was to harness all the talent within the African continent and ensuring that it is shared for the benefit of other women throughout Africa.
