CHRISTIAN Brothers College (CBC) rugby first team, known as the Hornets produced good results in their 2023 St John’s  Derby Day rugby tournament which was played in Harare at the weekend.
The Hornets played two matches and won all of them to round up a successful tournament for the Bulawayo-based side.

They played their first game against Hillcrest and rounded up their campaign against Wise Owl on Saturday.

In the first match, the Nelson Madida-coached side thumped their opponents 39-7 as they commanded the match throughout the proceeding. Against Wise Owl, a match which they were most looking forward to, the Hornets registered a closely contested 18-12 win.

Madida was impressed with   the way his team played in the capital, stating that it was a good pre-season as focus now shifts to the league which starts on Saturday.

“The tournament was very exciting, with the boys getting both wins against Hillcrest and Wise Owl. The boys fought hard especially in the second game against Wise Owl, which was a very tight game.

“Beating Hillcrest 39-7 and finishing the pre-season with a 18-12 win over Wise Owl in the Derby Day tournament making it a successful outing, the boys are ready to take on the tough long season,” said Madida.

Prior to their departure to Harare, the players and coaching staff held a team bonding session after going on a three-day bush camp. The Hornets had a successful pre-season after producing good results in tournaments they took part in.

Apart from the Derby Day, they also competed in the Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) Under-20 league which they won, Milton Easter Rugby Festival and also took part in another schools rugby competition in South Africa where they also managed to produce good results.

Madida added that they needed a good campaign towards the season to see where we are, for better preparation.

After a successful outing in the capital against teams that they don’t play with during the rugby season, the team left Harare yesterday.
