Celebrating transformative power of women’s empowerment

March is a time of reflection, celebration, and renewed commitment to gender equality as we honour women’s month.

It is a moment to acknowledge the immense contributions of women in Zimbabwe and beyond, who have shaped history, driven economic growth, nurtured families, and fought tirelessly for justice and progress.

Women’s month is not just a time to recognise the past; it is also a call to action to ensure that women continue to be empowered, respected, and given equal opportunities to thrive in all aspects of life.

Zimbabwean women have long been the backbone of their families, communities, and the national economy.

They have carried the nation through times of hardship, worked diligently in industries, ranging from agriculture to corporate leadership, and played crucial roles in the political and social transformation of the country.

Their resilience, hard work, and dedication have laid a solid foundation for Zimbabwe’s continued progress.

Throughout history, Zimbabwean women have demonstrated remarkable strength and courage.

During the liberation struggle, women stood shoulder to shoulder with men, fighting for the country’s independence. They served as freedom fighters, political organisers, nurses, and spies, enduring immense hardships to ensure that future generations would live in a free Zimbabwe.

Their sacrifices must never be forgotten. The courage of these women did not end with independence; it carried on as they took on leadership roles in politics, business, education, and governance.

Today, that same determination is evident in women across all sectors. They are leaders in Government, executives in businesses, educators shaping the minds of future generations, and entrepreneurs building strong enterprises.

Women have proven time and again that they are more than capable of leading and innovating, and it is essential that they are given equal opportunities to contribute to national development.

President Mnangagwa’s administration has demonstrated a strong commitment to gender equality and women empowerment. Policies and programmes have been put in place to ensure that women have access to economic opportunities, financial support, and leadership positions.

The Women’s Microfinance Bank, for example, has provided much-needed financial assistance to female entrepreneurs, enabling them to grow their businesses and become financially independent.

This initiative has empowered countless women who previously struggled to access capital due to systemic financial barriers. When women have financial independence, they are better positioned to make decisions that benefit their families and communities.

In politics, the Government has made significant efforts to increase female representation in leadership positions. More women are being appointed to influential roles, ensuring that their voices are heard in policy-making.

This is an important step toward building an inclusive society where the needs and perspectives of women are considered in national decision-making processes.

One of the most notable contributions of Zimbabwean women is in the agricultural sector. They constitute a significant portion of the country’s farming population, playing a crucial role in food production and rural development.

They work tirelessly on farms, growing crops, raising livestock, and ensuring that families and communities are well-fed.

The recent allocation of agricultural land to young people, including women, is a major step forward in empowering female farmers.

By owning land, women gain not only financial security, but also the ability to expand their agricultural ventures, increase production, and contribute to Zimbabwe’s food security goals. Land ownership is a powerful tool for economic empowerment, and the Government’s commitment to ensuring that women are included in this process is commendable.

However, for women in agriculture to thrive, they need more than just access to land.

They require training, financial support, and access to markets. Programmes that provide women with modern farming techniques, irrigation systems, and agricultural loans will further strengthen their role in national food production.

The Government and private sector must work together to ensure that female farmers receive the resources and support they need to maximise their potential.

Beyond agriculture, Zimbabwean women are also leading in entrepreneurship. Across the country, women are running successful businesses in various sectors, from retail and manufacturing to technology and finance. These women are proving that with the right support and opportunities, they can drive economic growth, create jobs, and contribute to national development.

The Government’s continued support for female entrepreneurs, including access to affordable loans, mentorship programmes, and business training, is a step in the right direction.

Women-owned businesses have the potential to transform Zimbabwe’s economy, and by investing in female entrepreneurs, the country is ensuring a more prosperous future for all.

Education has been one of the most transformative tools for women’s empowerment. Today, more girls are attending school than ever before, thanks to Government policies that promote equal access to education. Educated women are more likely to become leaders, innovators, and change-makers in society.

Girls and young women are increasingly excelling in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields—areas that were once dominated by men. Encouraging women to pursue careers in these fields will not only break gender stereotypes, but also contribute to Zimbabwe’s development in technology and innovation.

The Government must continue to invest in education and scholarship programmes that ensure every girl in Zimbabwe, regardless of her background, has the opportunity to pursue her dreams. When a woman is educated, she educates an entire generation.

The role of women in politics and governance is another area worth celebrating.

Female leaders have made significant contributions to policy-making, community development, and nation-building. The Government’s commitment to increasing women’s representation in leadership positions is commendable.

Having more women in decision-making roles ensures that policies are inclusive and address the unique challenges that women face.

Women in leadership are proving that they are not just capable of governing, but that they bring a unique perspective that strengthens national policies and social development. It is important that more young women are encouraged to participate in politics, leadership, and advocacy, ensuring that future generations continue to benefit from strong female representation.

While Zimbabwe has made great progress in advancing women’s rights, challenges still remain.

Gender-based violence, economic inequality, and cultural barriers continue to hold many women back. Addressing these issues requires collective action from the Government, communities, and individuals.

Laws protecting women from domestic violence, workplace discrimination, and harassment should be enforced more effectively.

Financial institutions should continue developing gender-sensitive policies that make it easier for women to access credit facilities and grow their businesses. Families and communities should also work to dismantle harmful stereotypes that limit women’s potential.

As we honour women’s month, let us remember that empowering women is not just about uplifting individuals—it is about transforming entire societies.

When women succeed, families are stronger, communities thrive, and nations prosper. The success of Zimbabwe depends on the full participation of its women in every aspect of life.

This month, let us celebrate the remarkable women who are shaping Zimbabwe’s future. Let us recognise the mothers, teachers, nurses, entrepreneurs, scientists, farmers, and leaders who work tirelessly every day to build a better nation.

More importantly, let us commit to ensuring that the progress we have made continues, so that the next generation of Zimbabwean women can achieve even greater heights.

Women’s month is a time for reflection and action. By continuing to invest in women’s empowerment, Zimbabwe is securing a brighter future for all. The Government has shown its commitment to this cause, and it is now up to society as a whole to support and uplift the women who are driving our nation forward.

As we celebrate women’s month, let us not only honour women’s achievements, but also reaffirm our commitment to their continued progress. Zimbabwean women have always been, and will continue to be the heart of this nation. When they rise, the nation rises with them.
